Nerd Illustrator Coloring attempt

Description

At work it is slow so I have Tuesdays off for a while. In the past, alot of professionals and teachers told me to create my art in vector formats using illustrator. So since I had some time today I researched a little more about illustrator. Mainly the Live Paint feature and tools. It took me around 4 to 5 hours to do this. I probably could have done this in Photoshop in about 1 to 1 1/2 hours.

In Illustrator I first outlined the figure in a heavy pen line. Then I converted the whole outline to Live Paint mode. I learned that you can toggle from live paint to normal mode by using the selection tool and double clicking the selection. So in normal mode I started adding various weights of lines to the inside of the image. I noticed that if you overshoot lines and go into the Live paint mode, that you can easily delete the overshot lines.

A couple annoying things I noticed about this method was that for some reason when you overshoot lines of different weights, they change to that weight. So several times I had to change the line weights back to the original weights I wanted them to be. Also in order for live paint to fill certain areas, the area needs to be closed and sometimes its hard to tell when the lines are very thick. Also, the tips of lines sometimes go over into an area that you may not want to go. Mainly if the tips are rounded they tend to overlap. I noticed that if you change the tip of that line to flat sometimes you won't have this problem. It could get very time consuming changing the tips of lines as well as constantly adjusting the thicknesses of the lines to where you are happy with them.

Just wondering if anyone has any coloring techniques to try in Illustrator because it seems to be a very frustrating program for me.
