Well i just got back from the SD Comicon this past monday. I had a good time. Saw alot of celebrities. Met alot of my favorite artists.
I went to 3 portfolio reviews. Nickelodean, Nickelodean Artist Mentorship program, and Pixar.
Nickelodean - basically said that they liked my graphic design in my portfolio, and my animal gesture drawings. They liked my characters but said that they all had to be in the style of all of the nickelodean shows to show that i could draw in different styles.
I also had some comic strip work that i wanted them to look at for storyboarding. However they wouldn't even look at it because it was not in a Storyboard format
They also said that they accept hand done traditional art portfolios but they do work all in digital on cintiq tablets. In other words it is probably better to do a future portfolio entirely digitally because if i was to get a job there then i would have to work entirely digitally anyways.
Nickelodean Artist Mentorship Program - This seemed like a good idea at first. (a 6 month paid artist internship at Nickelodean doing a variety of art related jobs for various cartoons such as character design, prop design, backgrounds, and some storyboarding).
First of all i included alot of characters in my portfolio so immediately the person doing the reviews said that i would need more prop design, backgrounds and storyboarding. At the same time, i spoke to alot of artists in the animation industry and they stressed that studios donot look for a jack of all trades guy but instead someone specialized in one things. So In other words studios would rather have a guy that only does character design or only does backgrounds. So this whole mentorship may be counterproductive to my final goal.
Pixar - Pretty reasonable review but a bit confusing. They did like my characters but said that i needed to include more sort of progress drawings that led up to the final characters. Also to include more turnaround drawings and elaborate on single characters.
What confused me the most was the fact they they liked the half done gestural horse drawings over the completed colored figure drawings that i did. They said that the gesture drawings had more life than the completed figure drawings. Again this seems counterproductive to me because generally when people buy my art, they want to see a final completely polished piece so in proceeding to do gestural quick drawings like this, people just don't like them or won't buy them.
From all my years of being on deviant art, i can't seem to figure out why my original characters and ideas don't seem to fly for me on here? Other people are successful with posting and having views on their original ideas and characters. The only things that i seem to get views on or even people looking at are fan art. Maybe that's all i will even bother doing anymore. Does anybody have the same problems with this?

Presentation of my original story
Sunday, May 27th I did a reading of my Original Story, "The Tale of Steve Silverado". This was probably the most important presentation in my life so far. I have been planning this day for the past 6 months. I have a terrible time with public speaking and it was very difficult for me to do. I practiced very hard and created a powerpoint presentation of the whole story. This past Thursday, I did a dry run of reading the story and discovered that the entire presentation was a bit too short. I decided to add a few of the developmental sketches of the characters and also included many of the newer designs of the characters for my new series, Swas
Skateboard Injury
This past weekend I broke my ankle skateboarding. I did it trying to land an Ollie impossible on flat ground. I landed the trick once, but when I tried it again, my back food that was spinning the board was slightly tilted inward. As I began to land my feet on the board, the back foot still tilted inward landed very hard first on the tail of the board followed by my other foot. There was a instant pop sound as my back foot landed on the ground first. It was scary. I had no idea what happened. Was it broken? Was it sprained? I was able to walk on it but barely with a lot of pain. So, for the remainder of Saturday I wrapped my foot with compres
Past Two Months
There has been a lot going on for me the past two months. At the middle of October, I took a week trip out to Los Angeles to meet with a childhood friend who works in the toy car industry. My goals in going out to California were to get a feeling for the area, meet with my friend about a job opportunity, check out some schooling opportunities and take some time to enjoy myself. I really enjoyed my time out there and would love to pursue moving out there in the future. Moving out to Cali has been on my mind a lot lately.
At the same time, my day job has been very busy also because of the holidays coming up. Honestly, my job isn't really that
This Past Week
I have been so depressed lately. This past week hasn't been too good for me. My last grandmother on my father's side died last Saturday night on Halloween and our Chihuahua, Pepper, died this past Wednesday. On top of it, I got a terrible head cold the end of last week into the weekend. Luckily, I was able to see a doctor today and get some medicine.
The one thing that really has made me upset was my art show opening that I planned this past Saturday. I spent a considerable amount of time the past month getting work framed, making an inventory, printing and distributing postcards and just mentally preparing for it. It wasn't really intended

Great review, and for the last 2 paragraphs, I have not been on here long but noticed that people who do get favs on their original characters already have a lot of fan art & watchers. I think the fan art draws people on here to Watch you... then when you get a lot of watchers, they will begin to fav your OC's if that makes any sense. Also are you submitting your OC's to groups to get noticed?
